My father's "Journey in Silence" tour continues… This Friday in NYC, Haskell Small will perform his composition, Rothko Room, as originally commissioned by The Phillips Collection in Washington DC (his - and my - hometown). This work for solo piano was inspired by a room of red Rothko paintings at the gallery.

Oh my goodness… The Berlinale experience was out of this world! "Butter on the Latch" was received with endless enthusiasm. All the screenings (theaters of 500 people!) were sold out each night. Josephine Decker, the director of both "Butter on the Latch" and her second feature - which was also chosen to screen at the festival ("Thou Wast Mild and Lovely”) - was a wandering star at the Festival. We are so proud of her. The critical acclaim and press received for "Butter" is making me so proud to be part of this film. Here’s some adorable giggly red-carpet pics - the whole thing was magical. Here's a trailer. Here’s some of the Press so far: Variety Magazine, Hammer to Nail, Indiewire, The Skinny, Still in Berlin, No Budge, Fandor, MSN Germany, Radio EINS, Interview Magazine, Huffington Post, Filmmaker Magazine, Chicago Tribune, The New Yorker, Bullett,The Playlist, Fimstarts.

At b in Chelsea, I worked on Tori Wraanes’s “Yes NIX” performance, as part of Performa13. I participated as one of the singers on bicycles circling round and round in song crescendoing dissonant chords, surrounding the central action. Tori is lovely and joyful all around. Stay tuned to the Performa site for updates.

FLICfest at the Irondale Center. This Saturday, my vocal trio, Hydra, will be singing and dancing while immersed inside Vanessa’s Walter’s dance piece, entitled “Ripening” , produced by The FLICfest. Walter’s performance explores the process of aging, and is both comical and sassy, as well as introspective and dark.

“Butter on the Latch”, the psychological horror fantasy/fiction film in which I play lead, will be premiering at the 2014 Berlinale (Berlin Film Fest) starting next week. What began as an acting experiment for me has taken off in wondrous ways– Here’s my favorite review to date by The New Yorker, who described the film as “an utter exhilaration of cinematic imagination, a pure high of invention”. Enormous congratulations to director Josephine Decker for achieving the unspeakable – Not only has the Berlinale invited “Butter on the Latch” to screen, but they’ve also invited in Josephine’s second-film-of the year, “Thou Wast Mild and Lovely”.

A Note of Gratitude. I wanted to share that – over the holidays- I had an unexpected travel opportunity to escape the frigid cold and soak up brilliant sun-rays and peace in Vieques, Puerto Rico with my amazing friend-of-ten-years, Danny. This beauty and bliss was transforming… and has helped me to welcome in 2014 with acceptance, calm, and clarity. Thank you. Thank you. Thanking who? Not sure. Just, thank you so much. I am grateful.

Black Sea Hotel will perform a Live Radio Set TONIGHT (Monday Nov 4th) on WFMU's Airborne event with Dan Bodah between 9pm and 12midnight. Willa and Sarah will be interviewed and will sing live excerpts from their new album, The Forest is Shaking and Swaying, with three guest special singers, Rima Fand, Yula Beeri, and Carl Linich.
"Black Sea Hotel are the Ramones of Balkan a capella song." They infuse this already-wild traditional music with their own gutsy sound that is by turns dissonant and driving, lyrical and ethereal. -- Dan Bodah (WMFU)

Tomorrow night, FRIDAY THE 13TH at 9:15pm --- come see my NYC FILM ACTING DEBUT in "Butter on the Latch", a 66 minute horror film/ psychological thriller, brilliantly conceived by director Josephine Decker and hauntingly filmed by cinematographer Ashley Connor.
In "Butter on the Latch" I play a girl, aptly named 'Sarah', who immerses herself very deeply (maybe too deeply) into the dark underworld of a Bulgarian folk song that she's learning at Balkan Camp in the Mendocino woodlands… It's chilling and haunting, and really that's all I'm gonna say. Please come hug me afterwards. I think I may need it.
